…Enugu CP Vows Justice
The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three masqueraders linked to a viral assault video that surfaced online, showing members of the Oriokpa Masquerade group physically attacking residents in Nsukka during a cultural celebration on June 22, 2025.
In a statement issued on June 24, 2025, by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the police disclosed that the suspects were arrested around 3:30 p.m. on June 23, following collaborative efforts between officers from the Nsukka Urban Division and law-abiding members of the community.
“The suspects, along with others still at large, took advantage of the Oriokpa Masquerade celebration to assault several innocent members of the public, inflicting bodily injuries,” the statement said.
One of the victims, according to police, is currently receiving medical treatment after sustaining injuries during the attack. The masqueraders initially resisted arrest and fled the scene, but were later identified and apprehended with the assistance of the community.
Reacting to the development, Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, condemned the abuse of cultural traditions and ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
“Masquerade celebrations are a sacred and symbolic aspect of our culture,” CP Giwa noted.
“But the actions of those who exploited the occasion to commit criminal acts are unacceptable.”
He stressed that the Command will not tolerate the misuse of cultural festivities as a cover for violence, warning that those found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
“All those involved will be brought to justice,” he assured.
The Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety during traditional events, and urged residents to continue collaborating with law enforcement to uphold peace and order across the state.
