The Office of Senator Austin Akobundu, who represents Abia Central Senatorial District, has reissued a strong public warning about persistent scammers using fake social media accounts to impersonate the lawmaker and defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.
According to a press release dated June 24, 2025, the Senator’s media unit stated that despite a previous public advisory issued on February 24, 2025, fraudsters have continued to exploit Senator Akobundu’s name and image—particularly on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram—to carry out criminal activities.
“These impersonators have persisted in using fake accounts bearing Senator Akobundu’s name and image to defraud unsuspecting members of the public,” the statement reads. “They continue to request money, make deceitful offers, and falsely claim to represent or speak on behalf of the Senator.”
The statement warned members of the public to be extremely cautious and to disregard any solicitation allegedly coming from the Senator on unofficial channels.
“We wish to reiterate in the strongest terms: Senator Austin Akobundu does not operate any unofficial or personal account to solicit funds, nor does he engage in private conversations with individuals on social media,” the media unit emphasized. “Any such interaction is fraudulent and should be regarded as a scam.”
Citizens were also reminded that any engagement with these fraudulent accounts is done at their own risk, and the Senator’s office will not be liable for any losses.
“For verified communication, inquiries, or concerns, please contact the official liaison office or authorized media team of Senator Austin Akobundu,” the release advised.
The office further encouraged the public to report fake accounts and assist in identifying the perpetrators, stating, “Together, let us continue to expose and bring these cybercriminals to justice.”
This is not the first time a Nigerian lawmaker has been the target of digital impersonation—a growing trend that poses a significant threat to public trust and online safety.
