Senator Neda Imasuen, who represents Edo South Senatorial District, has officially defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal party crises and the need to secure political benefits for his constituents.
The defection was formally announced on Wednesday during the Senate plenary session after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read a letter from Imasuen conveying his decision.
“I write to respectfully notify the distinguished Senate through the office of the Senate President of my resignation from the Labour Party (LP) and my decision to officially join the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the letter stated.
Imasuen explained that his decision followed “extensive consultations” with constituents and political stakeholders in Edo South.
According to him, the switch to the ruling party is intended to “position my senatorial district for greater visibility and opportunities.”
The lawmaker’s defection adds to a growing list of National Assembly members who have left both the LP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) amid leadership struggles and uncertainty over the future of the opposition parties.
The internal crises in both LP and PDP have continued to weaken their cohesion, fueling a wave of defections to the APC, which has strengthened its hold in the legislature.
Observers note that these defections may significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of future elections, particularly as opposition unity remains elusive.
