As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that 110 political associations have formally applied for registration as political parties.
The INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the disclosure on Wednesday, noting that as of Monday, June 23, 2025, the commission had received letters of intent from 110 groups seeking recognition as political parties.
Yakubu said the commission is “diligently processing” each application in accordance with the relevant laws, as well as INEC’s own Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022.
“We have acknowledged all requests received so far except six of them received recently, which will be done before the end of the week,” he stated.
He also used the occasion to remind those interested in registering new political parties that the official handbook outlining INEC’s regulations is available online.
“For emphasis, I wish to inform Nigerians, particularly those interested in registering new political parties, that the handbook containing the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022 is already available on the Commission’s website,” he added.
Yakubu confirmed that the full list of all 110 associations, complete with their proposed names, acronyms, addresses, and the names of their Chairmen and Secretaries, is being released for public scrutiny.
“For transparency and public information, the list will be uploaded to our website and social media platforms shortly while hard copies are included in your folders for this meeting,” he said.
Among the applications are parties aligning with the Obidient Movement, such as the Obidient Peoples Party and the Progressive Obedients Party. Also listed is another political body using the name Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA) — a name that previously existed in Nigeria’s political space.
The growing number of registration requests is seen as a signal of shifting political alignments ahead of 2027, with new actors and rebranded movements hoping to stake their claim in Nigeria’s evolving democracy.
