The Enugu State Police Command has announced that the three suspects arrested for assaulting members of the public during the Oriokpa Masquerade celebration have been arraigned and remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Custodial Centre.

The suspects — Emeka Eze (33), Omeke Uchechukwu (22), and Malachi Michael Nnaemeka (30) — appeared before the Nsukka Magistrate Court, where they were charged with conspiracy, demanding money with menaces, and causing grievous harm. The court adjourned the case to July 31, 2025, for further hearing.

“The three male suspects earlier arrested for their involvement in the assault and infliction of bodily harm on members of the public under the guise of celebrating the Oriokpa Masquerade have been arraigned and remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Custodial Centre,” the police said in a statement issued by SP Daniel Ndukwe, the Command’s Public Relations Officer.

The attack, which took place on June 22, 2025, along Aku Road, Nsukka, was captured in a viral video that showed a male victim being brutalized. The victim was hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the assault.

Following the incident, the suspects were identified and apprehended with the help of community members, while other culprits remain on the run.

The Commissioner of Police has ordered intensified operations to track down and arrest the remaining masqueraders involved in the attack. He also called on community leaders across the state to caution their subjects against hiding under cultural festivities to perpetrate crimes.

“Community leaders across Enugu State are urged to caution their subjects against committing crimes under the guise of masquerade or other cultural celebrations,” the statement warned.

The Enugu State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring that offenders face justice.
