Gunmen operating in two sport utility vehicles on Monday evening attacked a meeting venue in Ogboji community, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving multiple casualties in their wake.
The attackers reportedly arrived at the location where some individuals—said to be indigenes of Ebonyi State—were gathered, and opened fire without provocation.
While the exact motive for the attack remains unclear, speculations range from renewed enforcement of the already banned sit-at-home protest to internal disputes, as the assailants allegedly demanded the minutes of the meeting before the shooting began.
A disturbing video of the aftermath, circulating widely on social media, shows bodies sprawled on the ground as wailing filled the air.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Contrary to earlier reports of 19 deaths, the police stated that 10 people were killed and nine others sustained injuries.
In a statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police condemned the gruesome attack:
“The armed criminals came in two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) and attacked the gathering of a group unprovoked, shooting sporadically.
The victims were rushed to the hospital and regrettably, 10 people were confirmed dead. The bodies have been deposited in the morgue.”
Ikenga assured the public that the police, alongside other security agencies, have taken control of the scene and launched efforts to track down the attackers:
“The command will hunt down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
The police urged anyone with useful information to come forward as investigations intensify.
