The Senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District, Osita Ngwu, on Thursday donated medical equipment worth ₦50 million to the Mother of Mercy Hospital, Ihe, in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery in rural communities.
The donation, which fulfills a promise made during the hospital’s rededication on 29 December 2024, was presented by the senator’s Chief of Staff, Hon. Emeka Aneke.
Mr Aneke said the donation was a reaffirmation of the senator’s commitment to the welfare of his constituents, particularly in the areas of healthcare and community development.
“This donation is a reaffirmation of our commitment to prioritising the welfare of our people,” he said.
“We hope that these equipment will make the hospital functional and capable of addressing the health needs of residents in this area.”
He urged the hospital management to use the equipment strictly for public service, warning against exploitation of patients, and called on residents to take ownership by ensuring the security and maintenance of the donated items.
Mr Ngwu also invited the hospital to submit a fresh request for another ₦50 million worth of items, pledging continued support.
“Promise Kept” — Community Leaders React
In his remarks, the President of the Ihe Development Initiative (IDI), Dr. Madueke Ekoh, thanked the senator for fulfilling his commitment and commended him for his legislative performance and community-focused interventions.
Dr. Ekoh, represented by his vice president, Engr. Chikezie Solomon Anichukwu, also President of the Federation of Autonomous Communities, said the hospital’s revival began with a plan to raise ₦50 million but exceeded expectations, with over ₦365 million eventually realised.
“You have once again proven to be a gentleman whose word is his bond,” he said.
“Your support has earned you a chapter in the hospital’s history. With this equipment, MMHI can now extend its reach and improve service delivery across its catchment area.”
Dr. Ekoh also commended the hospital’s staff for recent improvements and urged continued professionalism and care in managing the new equipment.
Catholic Church, Federal Agency React
Receiving the equipment on behalf of the Catholic Bishop of Awgu Diocese, Rev. Fr. Basil Nwaeze praised Senator Ngwu and described the donation as a divinely inspired intervention.
“These new equipment will significantly improve the hospital’s service delivery,” he said.
“We thank God for using Senator Ngwu to touch lives positively.”
A representative of the Federal Co-operative College, Oji River, Mr. Okoye Emmanuel, whose agency oversaw the project, confirmed that all items were delivered according to specification.
