Troops of Operation SAFE HAVEN, currently engaged in Operation LAFIYAN JAMA’A, have apprehended a suspected kidnapper in possession of N13.7 million in cash, two AK-47 rifles, magazines, and ammunition along the Wamba–Jos Road in Kaduna State.

The breakthrough came as a result of routine snap checkpoints mounted by the troops at Agameti in Sanga Local Government Area on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, as part of continued efforts to rid the Joint Operations Area of criminal elements.

In a statement issued by the operation’s spokesperson, Major Samson Zhakom, the troops intercepted a Volkswagen vehicle with three occupants. However, two of them fled the vehicle just before reaching the checkpoint.

“Troops intercepted a Volkswagen vehicle with registration number JJN 336 YZ with 3 occupants. However, 2 of the occupants suddenly alighted from the vehicle and fled shortly before the checkpoint,” said Major Zhakom.

Upon searching the vehicle, troops discovered bullet holes and bloodstains, indicating recent violent activity. The lone suspect reportedly tried to bribe the troops, but they rejected the offer.

“Consequently, troops arrested the suspected kidnapper, conducted a thorough search on him and the vehicle, recovering the following items in the process:

  • Two AK-47 rifles
  • Two AK-47 magazines
  • 30 rounds of 7.62 mm (Special) ammunition
  • Three mobile phones
  • One knife
  • One football
  • Assorted charms
  • One torchlight
  • Cash sum of N13,742,000,” the statement detailed.

During interrogation, the suspect confessed to involvement in kidnapping activities along the Jos–Makurdi Road, and agreed to lead troops to his gang’s hideout. However, in a dramatic twist, he attempted to disarm the troops en route and was neutralised in the process.

Major Zhakom confirmed that follow-up operations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplices and other members of the syndicate.

“The troops remain committed to safeguarding lives and eliminating criminal elements within their operational area,” Zhakom said.
