The Ohworode of the ancient Olomu Kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, His Royal Majesty Uhurhie-Osadjere II, has passed away, marking the end of a significant chapter in the history of the revered Urhobo kingdom.
The official announcement was made at the royal palace in the Ovwor-Olomu community by the Otota of the kingdom, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN), who was accompanied by members of the Olomu traditional council of chiefs and members of the late monarch’s family. The group stood solemnly as they confirmed the sad news to the public.
His Royal Majesty Uhurhie-Osadjere II ascended the throne of his ancestors on May 20, 2023, and ruled the kingdom with wisdom, humility, and dedication for nearly two years. His death has plunged the kingdom into deep mourning.
To mark the gravity of the moment, the formal announcement was followed by the traditional firing of 21 cannon shots—an age-old gesture signifying the passing of a highly revered royal figure. Traditional Ema dancers also performed cultural rites reserved for only the most sacred occasions, paying homage to the late monarch.
In accordance with custom, the Olomu Kingdom has declared a one-month mourning period beginning Saturday, July 12, and ending August 12, 2025. Throughout this period, the entire kingdom is expected to observe solemnity in honor of the departed king.
All markets within the kingdom are to remain closed during the mourning period. While shops may operate on a limited scale, business transactions will be restricted to essential activities. Furthermore, no burial or marriage ceremonies will be permitted during the mourning period, as the community turns its full attention to paying tribute to the late ruler.
The traditional council has also directed that all Olomu chiefs wear mourning bands on their left wrists and refrain from wearing the traditional red cap—an emblem of chieftaincy and pride in the Olomu Kingdom—throughout the mourning period.
The passing of Ohworode Uhurhie-Osadjere II has left a profound void in the hearts of his people. He is remembered for his unwavering commitment to the unity, peace, and cultural heritage of the Olomu Kingdom.
