Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the National Assembly, has formally announced her departure from the Labour Party (LP), declaring her defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, Senator Kingibe described the move as a “calculated and deliberate” political decision, affirming her full commitment to the ADC.

“I’m totally and completely committed to ADC,” she stated. “But obviously, as the senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, don’t expect me to just take a lunch break and go collect a card. I want to do so with noise and fanfare.”

The lawmaker said her official induction into the ADC would be conducted with public fanfare, signalling the significance she attaches to her political shift.

Addressing questions on the state of ADC’s leadership and her confidence in the party’s future, Kingibe likened its current state to a growing child, encouraging patience and optimism.

“It’s something that is evolving,” she said. “So you cannot say while your child is still crawling that you are not happy with how he’s going to run. You wait. We are growing.”

On the possibility of losing her Senate seat due to constitutional restrictions on defections, Kingibe cited the internal division within the Labour Party as legal grounds for her move.

“I ask you to please read the constitution. There are two factions — clear factions — of Labour Party,” she said. “The perfect definition that the constitution gives for somebody to decamp without penalty applies in this case.”

“Even INEC got two sets of results and candidates, though they didn’t accept any. So if you ask me to stay in Labour Party, which faction do you want me to stay in?”

She maintained that her defection was both constitutional and principled.

“If there were not two distinct factions of Labour Party, I would not presume to decamp, because that is unconstitutional. But they are. And this is the definition the constitution gave why it would be okay to decamp to anywhere I wanted to go. I just chose ADC,” she concluded.

Senator Kingibe’s departure from LP marks a significant political realignment in the FCT and signals an early start to Nigeria’s 2027 electoral manoeuvrings.
