Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi have reached a significant agreement to support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The pact, described as an agreement in principle, hinges on the condition that the ADC presidential primary process will be transparent and credible — a benchmark all three contenders insist must not be compromised.
Confirming the development, Amaechi said the aspirants had agreed to support the eventual winner but noted that clarity was needed on what constitutes a truly transparent primary.
“What we have agreed is that whoever comes out of an open primary will enjoy the support of all,” Amaechi stated.
“But let’s first of all sit down and agree what we mean by open, because it is very easy for one man to hijack the process and still refer to it as open,” he added.
Both Atiku and Obi have also publicly signaled interest in contesting for the ADC presidential ticket in recent weeks.
Atiku, during a meeting with political stakeholders from Gombe in Abuja, hinted at his ambition while dismissing speculation that he was under pressure to step down for a southern candidate.
Meanwhile, Obi in a recent interview confirmed his intention to run again in 2027, debunking reports that he had agreed to be a running mate.
“That’s pure gossip,” Obi said, affirming he had no plans to settle for a vice-presidential role.
The unity move by the three political heavyweights signals a possible game-changing coalition in the build-up to 2027, as the ADC positions itself as a third force against the dominant political parties.
