Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will be laid to rest on Monday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, following his death on Sunday afternoon in a London clinic.
The burial plans were confirmed by TVC News on Sunday evening, which reported that the late president would be interred in accordance with Islamic rites.
Buhari passed away at about 4:30 p.m. in the United Kingdom while receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.
His former media aide, Garba Shehu, announced the development via a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirming the passing of the former president.
In response to the news, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has summoned an emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to address the national implications of the former leader’s death.
Presidential spokesman Mr. Bayo Onanuga also announced that Nigerian flags are to be flown at half-mast across the country in honour of the late president.
The announcement comes amid a wave of national mourning, as tributes continue to pour in for the late statesman, who served as Nigeria’s military ruler between 1984 and 1985, and as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
