President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially confirmed the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the development as a moment of national mourning.
The passing of the former Nigerian leader, who reportedly died in London on Sunday at about 4:30 p.m., was first announced by his former aide, Garba Shehu, who said Buhari succumbed to a prolonged illness.
Reacting to the sad news, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow and directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel immediately to the United Kingdom to escort the late president’s remains back to Nigeria.
“President Buhari died today in London at about 4.30 p.m., following a prolonged illness,” the statement read.
President Tinubu also personally reached out to Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the widow of the late president, to express his heartfelt condolences and support during this difficult time.
“President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs Aishat Buhari, the former President’s widow, and offered his deep condolences,” a presidential statement confirmed.
In honour of the late statesman, Tinubu has ordered that all national flags be flown at half-staff across the country as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
“President Tinubu has also ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany President Muhammadu Buhari’s body back to Nigeria,” it added.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, previously held power as military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements and national tributes are expected to be announced in the coming days.
