Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect, even as he aligns himself with a new political coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The development was confirmed through a personally signed letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP, Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State.

In the letter, Atiku expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities the party had given him over the years.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities I have been given by the Party. Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life. As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he wrote.

However, Atiku stated that the current direction of the PDP no longer aligns with its founding principles, hence his decision to part ways.

“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” he said.

Atiku concluded his letter by wishing the PDP and its leadership well in the future:

“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support.”

The resignation letter, stamped as received on July 14, 2025, was signed by Atiku Abubakar, Wazirin Adamawa and Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007.

This dramatic exit comes amidst Atiku’s movement toward a new political coalition being formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—a development that is already stirring intense speculation about his next political ambitions and reshaping Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of 2027.
