A senior lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Kogi State, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, has died under controversial circumstances allegedly involving a sexual encounter with a female student.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at a hotel in Anyigba and was first reported to the police by the hotel’s manager.
Spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Aya, confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, describing the situation as “unfortunate.” He further revealed that an autopsy has been conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
According to the police, the hotel manager, Moses Friday, said that a 22‑year‑old, 200‑level student of PAAU, Gloria Samuel, had rushed to the hotel reception to raise an alarm after the lecturer allegedly collapsed during their private meeting.
Police operatives were immediately alerted, and Dr. Ibikunle was rushed to a hospital, where he was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
Investigations are ongoing, with police stating that further action will depend on the outcome of their findings.
A student who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity claimed that the deceased lecturer had engaged in sexual activity with the student before he collapsed. The student, who is from the Department of Social Studies Education, was reportedly taken into custody and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further questioning.
Dr. Ibikunle, who was said to be married with children, had checked into the hotel with the student earlier on the day of the incident.
There are also unconfirmed reports suggesting that the lecturer might have consumed several energy drinks prior to his death.
