Mohammed Babangida, son of former military president General Ibrahim Babangida, has formally declined his appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BoA), despite describing the nomination as a “true privilege.”
In a letter dated July 21, 2025, and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Babangida expressed deep gratitude for the confidence reposed in him but said he could not accept the offer after careful consideration.
“I convey my sincere gratitude for the nomination. It is a true privilege to be thought worthy of such a strategic role in advancing the nation’s agricultural and economic development,” Babangida wrote.
However, he explained that after “careful reflection and consultation,” he concluded that the timing was not right for him to take on the position.
“This decision was not made lightly. It stems from a convergence of personal and professional considerations which, at this time, would not allow me to serve with the level of focus and commitment the position rightly demands,” he stated.
While stepping aside from the appointment, Babangida reaffirmed his loyalty to the government’s economic agenda.
“I remain fully committed to the vision of a prosperous and self-sufficient Nigeria under your leadership,” he assured President Tinubu.
“I continue to hold your administration in the highest regard and stand ready to support national development in other ways where my expertise may be of service.”
He concluded his letter by expressing appreciation:
“Thank you once again for your confidence in me. I am deeply appreciative.”
Babangida’s decision comes at a critical time when the federal government is intensifying efforts to diversify the economy through agriculture. The Bank of Agriculture remains central to these plans, tasked with empowering farmers, supporting agribusiness, and driving rural development nationwide.
