President Bola Tinubu has approved the nomination of Professor Yusuf Mohammed Yusuf as a commissioner in the Nigerian Law Reform Commission following the rejection of the same role by an earlier nominee, Professor Fatima Alkali.
Alkali, who was nominated on June 2, 2025, turned down the appointment and failed to appear before the Senate for screening. Her decision was formally communicated to the Presidency, prompting the search for a replacement.
In a letter read on the floor of the Senate during Wednesday’s plenary, President Tinubu urged lawmakers to consider and confirm Yusuf’s nomination in line with Section 21 of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio subsequently referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters for screening.
The committee is expected to conduct the necessary review and present its findings and recommendations to the Senate in due course.
