The Enugu State Police Command has dismissed as “entirely false, unfounded, and fabricated” a viral social media report claiming that five women who sell fresh corn at New Market, Enugu, were lured by a man in a minibus and later murdered, with their mutilated bodies allegedly dumped by the roadside.

A statement issued on Friday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said no such incident has been reported anywhere in the state, and no investigation or credible intelligence supports the claims in circulation.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no report of missing or found persons matching the description in the viral post has been received, and no bodies have been discovered with missing organs as claimed,” the statement read.

The Command described the post as deliberate misinformation aimed at inciting fear and distorting public perception of the security situation in Enugu.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, urged residents to remain calm and disregard the story, reassuring them of the Command’s commitment to public safety and crime prevention.

“The Command remains unwavering in sustaining the relative peace and security in Enugu State. We are working to identify and bring to book the originators and peddlers of the fake report for prosecution in accordance with extant laws,” CP Giwa said.

He further warned that spreading fake news is a criminal offence and would henceforth be treated seriously.

The public is advised to verify information before sharing and to report suspicious activities or security concerns to the nearest Police Station or via the Command’s emergency lines: 08032003702, 08086671202, or the Enugu State Command-and-Control Centre on 112.
