In yet another poignant reminder that another Head of State died in July, Abia State Governor, H.E. Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has approved a special wreath‑laying ceremony in honour of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Major‑General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi‑Ironsi, GCFR.

Aguiyi‑Ironsi, an illustrious son of Abia and a revered figure in Nigeria’s history, was killed on July 29, 1966, under tragic circumstances alongside his host, Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, M.C., then Military Governor of the Western Region.

As part of activities marking the anniversary of his passing, a statement from the family revealed that Ambassador High Chief Thomas Aguiyi‑Ironsi, CON, the late Head of State’s first son and a former Minister of Defence, will lay a wreath at his father’s tomb on behalf of the family, friends, and well‑wishers across Nigeria and the diaspora.

The family described Governor Otti’s gesture as “gracious and deeply appreciated,” noting that Aguiyi‑Ironsi remains a symbol of sacrifice and patriotism whose memory continues to inspire generations.

Prayers will also be offered for the repose of his soul and for lasting peace in Nigeria.

An invitation has been extended to H.E. Senator Hope Uzodinma, Governor of Imo State, to participate in the solemn ceremony.

Meanwhile, there are strong speculations that Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi‑Ironsi may soon be appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Switzerland or as a Special Envoy—an appointment that many say would be a worthy recognition of his father’s legacy and his own service to the nation.

Nearly six decades after his death, the ceremony stands as a poignant reminder that another Head of State died in July, leaving behind a legacy of courage and sacrifice that Nigeria continues to honour.
