The Enugu State Government has demolished a defective staircase at the Smart School, Amamkpunato, Achi Uno Ward 2, Oji River Local Government Area, after it failed a structural integrity test.
According to a statement signed by Dan Nwomeh, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Mainstream Media, the demolition was carried out on Tuesday in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s directive for a comprehensive assessment of all ongoing Smart School projects across the state.
“The staircase in question was among the defects previously identified by the government’s internal monitoring mechanisms. It had been flagged for remediation by the contractor at no cost to the government,” the statement read.
Nwomeh explained that the contractor responsible for the substandard work will face sanctions, as the Mbah administration has maintained a zero-tolerance stance toward poor execution of public projects.
“The contractor responsible will also face appropriate sanctions in line with the government’s zero tolerance for substandard work,” he added.
He stressed that the action was taken proactively to ensure safety and transparency, noting that the government would not allow misinformation to cloud its commitment to quality infrastructure.
“This post is made to preempt the usual wave of fake news, distortion, and mischief by detractors who may seek to exploit the development for their selfish agendas. Let it be reiterated that the Mbah administration will not tolerate substandard work,” the statement said.
Nwomeh assured residents that the safety of pupils, teachers, and host communities remains the administration’s highest priority:
“The safety of pupils, teachers, and communities remains paramount, and all Smart Schools will meet the structural and quality benchmarks required to deliver long-term value and safety.”
The Enugu State Government reiterated that all defects identified in Smart School projects are being addressed, ensuring that contractors bear the cost of remediation while the projects meet world-class standards.
