In a major step towards enhancing public health and environmental sanitation, the Enugu East Local Government Area has taken bold action to support the Enugu State Government’s Open Defecation Free (ODF) policy through the procurement of improved toilet systems and a new healthcare outreach initiative.
Fulfilling a commitment made during a stakeholders’ engagement on July 16, 2025, the Executive Chairman of Enugu East LGA, Engr. Pst. Beloved-Dan Obi Anike, has procured 1,500 improved ventilated toilet systems for communities across the council area. The new facilities were delivered by the office of EN-RUWASSA and received by the Deputy Mayor on behalf of the Council Chairman.
This latest intervention builds on earlier steps taken by the council to strengthen sanitation infrastructure, including the establishment of a WASH Department and the inauguration of a WASH committee aimed at driving hygiene-related projects.
In tandem with the sanitation push, the council has announced plans for a Healthcare Outreach Program targeted at traders and residents in major markets within the LGA. The program will commence on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Abakpa Nike Market, delivering critical health services to underserved populations.
These coordinated initiatives reflect Enugu East LGA’s commitment to fostering a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents, in line with broader state-level development goals.
With these ongoing efforts, the local government is not only combating open defecation but also positioning itself as a model for grassroots health and sanitation reforms in Enugu State.
