Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s inability to offer “meaningful political direction” or address Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
In a letter addressed to the PDP leadership on Thursday, Melaye announced his immediate withdrawal from the party “at all levels of involvement,” stating that the decision followed deep introspection on the current state of the opposition party.
“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at all levels of involvement,” Melaye wrote. “This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”
Melaye, who served in the National Assembly between 2015 and 2023, further stated: “Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the party or lend my support to her agenda.”
While expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve under the PDP, he insisted that his conscience would not allow him to remain affiliated with the party.
“Please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” he concluded.
Melaye’s exit underscores the growing crisis within the PDP, which continues to battle internal divisions and uncertainty over its strategic direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
