President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), to enable him to consolidate key reforms and oversee the completion of critical national trade and security initiatives.

The announcement was made on Thursday in an official statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

“The Presidency announces that the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, which is due to expire on August 31, 2025, has been extended by one year,” the statement read.

The extension is part of President Tinubu’s strategic efforts to maintain continuity and drive progress in the nation’s trade and border management systems. According to the statement, the decision will enable the CG to consolidate ongoing reforms and deliver on key projects.

These include:

  • The modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service;
  • The implementation of the National Single Window Project; and
  • The execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.

“President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” the statement added.

It further noted that the President is confident the extension will bolster the Customs Service’s role in facilitating trade, generating revenue, and enhancing national border security.

“The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.”
