….Human body parts recovered from native doctor’s shrine as manhunt for prime suspect intensifies

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, in connection with the gruesome murder and mutilation of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga said “the arrest, which took place on 25th July 2025, was made possible through the cooperation of Umueri village members in Ogbunike. The suspect was taken into custody after the nurse’s dismembered body was discovered in a soakaway pit, sparking widespread outrage across the community.

‘During interrogation, Nwafor confessed to being the girlfriend of the prime suspect, identified as Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, who is currently on the run. She told investigators that she was called by Elobisi to clean up the blood-stained crime scene after the murder.

“She also revealed how they sell body parts to various native doctors in the area,” the police disclosed.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim, a trained nurse, was lured to the suspect’s home under the guise of providing medical assistance before being murdered.

“Acting on Nwafor’s confession, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) raided a shrine in the early hours of 29th July 2025 belonging to a native doctor, Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile, of Itima Amawa Village, Ogbunike. During the raid, suspected human body parts concealed in nylon bags were recovered.

The Police Command has since launched an intensive manhunt for Elobisi and other suspected collaborators and buyers of the victim’s body parts.

Condemning the crime, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, described the killing as:

“Inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life.”

He urged members of the public with credible information on the whereabouts of the fleeing suspects to assist the police, assuring that:

“The identity of such informants will be adequately protected.”

The disturbing incident has sparked renewed calls for improved community vigilance and swift justice in cases of ritual-related crimes.
