Preparations are in top gear for the Service of Songs in honour of late Nigerian football icon, Christian “Chairman” Chukwu, as family, friends, and the sporting community gear up to celebrate his remarkable life and legacy.
The event is scheduled to hold on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. It marks the formal commencement of a week-long series of activities lined up to pay tribute to the former Super Eagles captain and coach who passed away on April 12, 2025.
According to the funeral service released by the Central Planning Committee and signed by Barr. Lloyds Ekweremadu Jr., Chairman CPC who’s also the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Enugu State and Engr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, for deceased family, the Service of Songs will be a solemn and reflective occasion where loved ones, colleagues, football administrators, and fans will gather to share memories and offer prayers in honour of the late football legend.
Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman,” captained Nigeria to its first African Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in 1980 and later managed the national team, leaving a legacy of patriotism, discipline, and football excellence.
The Enugu State Government, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and other key stakeholders are expected to attend the event, which will serve as a platform for tributes from dignitaries across the country.
The Service of Songs will pave the way for subsequent events including a Night of Tributes on August 13, a colloquium on August 14, a novelty football match and Christian wake on August 15, and his final interment in Obe, Nkanu West LGA on August 16.
Christian Chukwu’s death marks the end of an era in Nigerian football, and his send-off is set to reflect the national honour accorded to one of the country’s greatest sporting heroes.
