The Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Sani Sami, has died at the age of 81.

His death occurred on Saturday night in a London hospital, following an illness.

Confirming the development in a statement issued to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday, the Kebbi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, said:

“The Emir of Zuru, His Royal Highness, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Sani Sami (Rtd), has passed away. He died on Saturday night in a London hospital after a brief illness.”

Born in 1943, Maj.-Gen. Sami had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army before ascending the throne of Zuru in 1995. He held several command and staff positions and was widely respected for his discipline and leadership both in military service and in traditional administration.

As Emir, he played a pivotal role in promoting peace, cultural preservation, and community development in Zuru Emirate and across Kebbi State. His reign was marked by efforts to strengthen traditional institutions and foster unity among diverse ethnic groups in the area.

The late monarch is survived by four wives and seven children.
