The Anambra State Police Command says it has achieved major breakthroughs in its ongoing fight against child trafficking and sexual offences, with recent successful operations leading to arrests and rescue missions.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said operatives of the Gender Unit, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), rescued a six-year-old child who had been stolen and trafficked to Ondo State.

“Sequel to an intelligence-based investigation into a case of conspiracy, child stealing, and trafficking transferred from Okpoko Police Station to the State CID Gender Unit, operatives swung into action and successfully rescued the 6-year-old victim from an alleged foster parent in Ondo State,” the statement read.

The police confirmed that the rescued child has since been reunited with his biological mother, while all the suspects have been charged before the Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Court for prosecution.

Similarly, on August 13, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, responded to a distress call in Ebenebe Community over the defilement of an 11-year-old girl.

According to the police, one Uchenna Nweke, an 18-year-old male, was arrested after allegedly forcing his way into a bathroom where the victim was bathing and having unlawful carnal knowledge of her.

“Preliminary findings revealed that the suspect allegedly forced his way into the bathroom where the victim was bathing. Further revelations from the medical report confirmed the suspect’s culpability,” Ikenga stated.

The case, he added, will be charged in court on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, assured the public that the command remains resolute in protecting children and other vulnerable groups.

“The Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons remains non-negotiable. Offenders of such heinous crimes will face the full weight of the law,” CP Orutugu warned.
