The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a Chinese national, Mu Hua Qiang, over alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in the Aguleri axis of the state.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, noting that the suspect was handed over to the police by operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade) on August 22, 2025.
According to the statement, Qiang, aged 45 and residing in Aguleri, was arrested following intelligence reports that linked him to unauthorized mining operations in the community.
“The suspect has been placed in lawful custody, and his statement has been voluntarily obtained. Further investigations are ongoing to uncover the extent of his involvement and possible accomplices in the illicit activity,” Ikenga said.
The Police Command commended the synergy between local security outfits and the police in tackling crime and reiterated its commitment to addressing illegal mining, which poses environmental and security risks in the state.
“We assure the good people of Anambra that we will not relent in our efforts to clamp down on activities that threaten public peace and the state’s natural resources,” Ikenga added.
Authorities say more details will be communicated as investigations progress.
