The First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, has launched the “One Woman, One Wrapper” initiative in Enugu East Local Government Area, describing it as a profound gesture of care, dignity, and inclusiveness for women across the state.

The initiative, flagged off at a colourful ceremony in Enugu East on Tuesday, aims to distribute 10,000 wrappers to 10,000 women in the council area, symbolizing solidarity, empowerment, and recognition of women’s pivotal role in family and community life.

Represented at the event by the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Barr. Chidimma Eguonu, the First Lady praised the vision of the Executive Chairman of Enugu East LGA, Engr. Pastor Beloved-Dan Obi Anike, and his wife, Dr. Mrs. Happiness Obi Anike, for championing the cause of women.

“This initiative is not just about gifting wrappers; it is a profound statement of care and respect for our women,” Mrs. Mbah said. “It aligns with the Social Inclusion and Protection pillar of my Five-Point Developmental Agenda, which seeks to ensure that women are not left behind in the drive for sustainable and inclusive development.”

The Executive Chairman, Engr. Anike, described the initiative as a demonstration of compassion and unity, noting that the wrapper goes beyond fabric to represent dignity and togetherness.

“The gift of a wrapper is a statement of solidarity, care, and empowerment,” he said. “We are weaving not just fabric, but a story of love, inclusion, and shared humanity.”

In her remarks, the Convener of the event and First Lady of Enugu East LGA, Dr. Mrs. Happiness Obi Anike, highlighted the importance of women in the family and society, stressing that the initiative symbolises love and inclusiveness.

“This programme signifies care and recognition of the irreplaceable roles of women. I encourage all women to continue standing tall in their families, communities, and places of duty,” she said, while expressing gratitude to her husband for his support and platform to champion women-centered programmes.

The event also featured goodwill messages from dignitaries, including the State Woman Leader of PDP, Amb. Peace Patrick Nnaji; Member IV of the Enugu State Local Government Service Commission, Amb. Mrs. Amaka Nweke; the Governor’s SSA on SDGs, Engr. Onyinye; and the SSA on Women Inclusion to the Executive Chairman, Hon. Mrs. Chinwe Ogbu.

They commended the initiative as a bold step in advancing social inclusion and praised the synergy between the Enugu East LGA leadership and the state government.

Also in attendance were the Deputy Chairman of Enugu East LGA, Hon. Engr. Kingsley Obi Anike, and the Commissioner for Gender Affairs, Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Eni, among others.

The “One Woman, One Wrapper” initiative is expected to have a far-reaching impact on the lives of women in Enugu East, reinforcing the government’s commitment to gender inclusivity and grassroots empowerment.
