The immediate past Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, was attacked by thugs in his hometown of Birnin-Kebbi on Monday.

The incident occurred as his convoy was returning from a condolence visit to the residence of the late Malam Tukur Kola, the Chief Imam of Dr. Bello Haliru Jumu’ah Mosque, who passed away two days earlier.

The attack took place near the APC party office along Old NITEL Road, where Malami’s vehicle was reportedly stoned by unknown individuals. About six vehicles in the convoy were destroyed.

While the situation has since calmed, a heavy presence of security personnel has been deployed to monitor both the APC office and Malami’s residence.

Supporters of the former minister gathered outside his home, expressing dismay over the incident. “We are shocked and saddened by this attack on our leader,” one supporter said. “We demand justice and security for our leader.”

It is worth noting that Malami, a former card-carrying member of the APC, announced his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) two months ago.

Police operatives have since arrived at the scene and commenced investigations, with efforts underway to apprehend the perpetrators. The remote cause of the attack has not yet been determined.

The incident has heightened tension in the area, with residents demanding better protection. “This attack is a clear indication that something needs to be done to improve security in the state,” a resident said. “We cannot continue to live in fear of attacks and violence.”
