Police operatives in Anambra State have rescued a 28-year-old man, Mr. Okwudili David Onyiba, who attempted to take his own life by climbing a high-tension power transmission pole in Awada, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, September 2, 2025, behind the Grace of God Mission, off NEPA Road, Awada.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives attached to the Awada Division responded swiftly after receiving a distress call.
“The operatives immediately mobilised to the scene, cordoned off the area to prevent danger, and controlled the large crowd that had gathered. After several minutes of persuasion by the Police and some concerned members of the public, the man eventually climbed down safely,” Ikenga said.
The victim was taken into protective custody at the police station, where he identified himself as Onyiba.
In reaction to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the operatives for their swift intervention and directed that Onyiba undergo proper medical and mental health evaluation.
“We will ensure he receives the necessary support for his well-being. Mental health is a serious issue, and the Command remains committed to safeguarding lives in all circumstances,” CP Orutugu stated.
The Commissioner also appealed to members of the public to seek peaceful and lawful solutions to personal challenges.
“We urge citizens to reach out to family, friends, or relevant support groups in times of distress. Suicide is not an option,” he added.
The police assured that further developments on the matter will be communicated in due course.
