The political landscape in Anambra State is shifting rapidly ahead of the November 8 governorship election, as two members of the State House of Assembly have dumped the Labour Party (LP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers are Hon. Paul Obu, representing Orumba North State Constituency, and Hon. Pat Okafor, representing Onitsha North II Constituency. Their sudden move is seen as a major blow to the Labour Party, which has been struggling to consolidate its presence in the state since the last general elections.
Welcoming the defectors, APC stakeholders in Anambra said the move reflects a growing realignment in the state’s politics.
“The reality of what’s coming on November 8th is getting clearer. We welcome these two House of Assembly members and others who are on their way to APC,” the party stated.
Reports also indicate that at least 10 other lawmakers are in talks to join the APC in the coming days, a development that could significantly weaken the Labour Party’s influence in the state legislature and shift momentum in the build-up to the polls.
Political watchers believe the defections underscore the APC’s determination to mount a formidable challenge in the governorship race. With Governor Charles Soludo of APGA seeking to protect his turf, and Labour Party losing ground, the November election is shaping up to be one of the fiercest battles in Anambra’s recent political history.
