Nigerians and people in several other parts of the world will have the rare opportunity to witness a lunar eclipse, according to astronomical forecasts released by experts.

The celestial event, which occurs when the Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon, casting its shadow on the lunar surface, is expected to be visible across Africa, Europe, parts of Asia, and the Americas.

Confirming the development, an official of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) explained that the phenomenon will unfold in stages, beginning with a penumbral eclipse before reaching its peak.

“The lunar eclipse will begin in the evening hours and will be visible in Nigeria provided the sky is clear of clouds. It is an astronomical occurrence that reminds us of the wonders of our solar system,” the official said.

Astronomers noted that unlike a solar eclipse, lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye, binoculars, or telescopes. Residents are, however, advised to find open spaces away from artificial lighting for the best view.

The agency added that the upcoming event will be the only significant lunar eclipse of the year, making it a special occasion for sky watchers, stargazers, and astronomy enthusiasts.

“This is a natural spectacle that doesn’t happen every day. We encourage Nigerians to take advantage of this moment to observe and appreciate the beauty of our universe,” NASRDA emphasized.

With the anticipation building, many astronomy clubs and enthusiasts across the country have already announced plans to organize public viewing sessions to enable people to experience the rare cosmic display.
