The Enugu East Human Capital Development Trust-Fund Board yesterday announced the beneficiaries of the second series of the Greater Tomorrow Scholarship Scheme (GTSS), reinforcing the Council’s commitment to education and holistic development.
The scholarship examination, which took place on August 16, 2025, drew about 1,700 candidates from both public and private schools across the Local Government Area. From this pool, 50 top-performing students emerged as winners, securing full scholarships for their Senior Secondary School education in top schools nationwide.
Executive Chairman of Enugu East Local Government, Engr. Pst. Beloved-Dan Obi Anike, said the scheme was a deliberate investment in the future of the community.
“While our administration has invested heavily in Human Capital Development, it has also not left other sectors behind,” he stated.
He highlighted key infrastructure projects executed under his leadership, including the 1.74km Ugwuomu Smart School road, 1km Ifo Layout–Umuchigbo link road, 1.8km Eziama road, and 3.8km Ibagwa Nike internal road projects, noting that these complement the scholarship scheme by providing enabling environments for growth.
“The Greater Tomorrow Scholarship Scheme is more than just an educational initiative, it is a strategic investment in Human Capital Development,” he emphasized.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prof. B.A.F Ngwu, formally announced the results, stressing that the scholarships will empower the brightest students in the community to pursue academic excellence without financial limitations.
“These 50 students will benefit from a full scholarship program covering their Senior Secondary School education in reputable institutions nationwide,” he said.
The Senior Special Assistant on Education, Hon. Donatus Nnamani, also disclosed the results of the Secondary School Entrance Examination for Primary 6 pupils from public schools.
“The initiative seeks to award scholarships to another 50 students into reputable secondary schools in Enugu, covering their Junior Secondary School classes, such as Command Day Secondary School, Daughters of Divine Love (DDL), Holy Rosary College (HRC), among others,” he explained.
Stakeholders have lauded the Chairman’s vision. Journalist Mr. Emefiena Okonkwo described Anike’s leadership as exceptional.
“Your commitment to the development of your council is Un-Nigerian. All the while, we have been covering Local Government administrations, but I haven’t seen this type of development,” he remarked.
Education analysts in the state also observed that the GTSS is fast becoming a model for Local Government-led scholarship programs in Nigeria, citing its competitive selection process, wide participation, and inclusiveness.
Enugu East Local Government has consistently placed human capital development at the heart of its agenda, with interventions spanning education, health, and infrastructure. The Council reiterated that the Greater Tomorrow Scholarship Scheme will be sustained and expanded to accommodate more beneficiaries in future editions.
