Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS)

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has dismissed reports suggesting that Nigerians without a Tax Identification Number (TIN) will be unable to open or operate bank accounts.

Reacting to the claims, FIRS Technical Assistant on Broadcast Media, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, described the information as a misconception that has spread widely among the public.

She clarified that Nigeria’s tax system has already been redesigned to integrate with existing national registries, eliminating the need for individuals or businesses to face new barriers in accessing banking services.

“Every individual or entity is automatically identifiable for tax purposes without imposing new hurdles,” Atoyebi explained.

According to her, the integration ensures that the tax framework works seamlessly with national identity structures, while also guaranteeing easier compliance and transparency without creating unnecessary difficulties for citizens.
