The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has reaffirmed its commitment to the pursuit of an independent Biafra, declaring that there will be “no going back” on the self-determination struggle.
Speaking on the occasion of MASSOB’s 24th anniversary, marked on September 13, 2025, the group’s leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu, emphasized that the agitation remains firmly rooted in the principle of non-violence.
“MASSOB has reinstated our noble commitment in continuation of the self-determination struggle for the actualization and restoration of the Sovereign State of Biafra through the principles of non-violence,” Madu said.
The group used the anniversary to pay tribute to its members and sympathizers who lost their lives over the years in clashes with Nigerian security agencies.
“Today, as we celebrate our 24 years of formation, we remember our brothers and sisters whose lives were cut short because of Biafra in the hands of Nigerian security agents,” Madu stated. “Our non-violent members died innocently with brave hearts for the Biafra cause. They were molested, mesmerized, humiliated, and brutally killed by the armed security agents of our oppressors.”
MASSOB also extended its remembrance to the families of its “fallen heroes,” acknowledging the trauma and hardship they continue to endure.
“We also remember the parents of our fallen heroes. Some are still traumatized, some are dead because of shock, while others are living ghosts of themselves,” the statement read.
Reiterating its unwavering position, the group declared: “We are committedly, consistently, and uncompromisingly agitating for an independent state of Biafra from Nigeria.”
MASSOB insisted that Biafra remains the solution to what it described as decades of marginalization and subjugation of the Igbo people.
“Biafra is the answer to the numerous subjective slavery Nigeria subjected Ndi Igbo into, ranging from political, economic, academic, religious, cultural, and social slavery,” Madu said.
He further argued that Nigeria has failed to achieve true nationhood, accusing the state of injustice, inequity, and repression.
“Since independence, peace, justice, and equity have remained elusive to Nigeria. These undeniable realities are the reasons the Nigerian state is afraid of Biafra, which represents the truth they cannot legitimately counter. Out of weakness, jittery and fear, Nigeria resorts to repression, persecution, killings, and detention of Biafran agitators,” the MASSOB leader asserted.
Madu stressed that the organization’s struggle, which has spanned over two decades, cannot be abandoned or corrupted.
“MASSOB has resolved that 24 years of our long walk to freedom can never be jeopardized, compromised, or corrupted. We shall never relent in our non-violent Biafra struggle because the truth shall always prevail over falsehood,” he declared.
