The Enugu State Police Command has announced the arrest of four suspected kidnappers and car thieves, alongside the recovery of 15 stolen vehicles traced to different locations across Enugu, Nsukka, Anambra, and Rivers States.
Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, disclosed this during a press briefing held at the State Command Headquarters, GRA, Enugu, on September 11, 2025.
According to the CP, the criminal gang specialized in abducting commercial and private drivers, forcing them to withdraw money from their accounts, and then fleeing with their vehicles.
“The gang was behind multiple kidnappings of drivers, whom they abducted to unknown locations, withdrew funds from their accounts, and made away with their vehicles,” Giwa said.
Foiled Kidnap in Enugu GRA
He revealed that the same gang was responsible for a violent attack in May 2025, when they abducted a man driving a Mercedes Benz Jeep at about 9:00 p.m. around the Government Reserved Area (GRA), Enugu.
“Following my immediate directive, Tactical Teams were deployed to track and apprehend the criminals and rescue the victim. The operatives successfully rescued the victim, neutralized one of the gang members, while others escaped in the victim’s SUV, which was later recovered,” Giwa explained.
Police also recovered a locally made double-barrel pistol loaded with two live cartridges and a green Nissan vehicle used in the operation.
Commendations for Stakeholders
The Commissioner of Police attributed the Command’s recent operational successes to the support of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, and the security-driven leadership of the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.
“These operational achievements would not have been possible without the invaluable support and leadership of the Inspector-General of Police. I also acknowledge the unwavering commitment of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, whose security-focused leadership has provided the enabling environment for our work,” Giwa said.
He also expressed appreciation for the cooperation of other security agencies, the Enugu State Forest Guards, the Neighbourhood Watch Group, and law-abiding citizens who, he noted, “have continued to provide credible intelligence and information that aid our operations.”
The CP commended officers and men of the Command for their resilience and professionalism.
“I always remind them that the best reward for good work is more good work,” he added.
