The Akwa Ibom State Government has declared two medical doctors wanted for abandoning their duty posts after being trained for eight years with public funds.

The doctors, Dr. Uduakabasi Ita, a Consultant Radiologist, and Dr. Mfonobong George Bassey, a Consultant Hematologist, are both staff of the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health.

According to the government, the doctors have been given two options: either return to their duty posts in the state civil service or refund all the resources expended on their training.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, warned that henceforth, medical officers trained by the state must serve out the agreed number of years before being allowed to resign.

He stressed that the government would no longer tolerate a situation where doctors trained with taxpayers’ money abandon service for “greener pastures” without first fulfilling their obligations to Akwa Ibom people.

“The government will not allow its best hands to exit service for greener pastures without first serving Akwa Ibom people whose resources were deployed for their training,” Dr. John stated.
