The Enugu State Police Command says it has arrested four armed robbery suspects in separate operations across the state, recovering three firearms and other incriminating exhibits.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, said the arrests were made following proactive operations under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa.
According to the statement, operatives attached to Ikirike Division and the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, while on routine patrol along Agbani Road on March 17, 2025, at about 11:40 p.m., responded to a distress call that led to the arrest of one Okechukwu Anthony, 25, who allegedly attempted to rob a man of his smart wristwatch.
“A locally fabricated pistol, resembling a Beretta but without a magazine or ammunition, was recovered from the suspect,” Ndukwe said.
In another operation the same day, at about 3:15 p.m., operatives of the 9th Mile Division, acting on credible intelligence, foiled an armed robbery along Uzo-Nwa Money, Ngwo, in Udi Local Government Area.
“On sighting the police, the hoodlums fled, but with the support of vigilant citizens, two suspects — Chukwudi Stephen Ngwu, 36, and Chibuike Ohaekelem, 23 — were arrested, while one other escaped,” the police spokesperson revealed.
A locally made pistol and a bag of rice were recovered. Preliminary investigations showed the suspects, alongside their fleeing accomplice, had boarded a tricycle with the victim and robbed him of his rice consignment.
Earlier, on September 15, 2025, at about 4:10 a.m., operatives attached to Ogui Division, in collaboration with residents, apprehended one Oluchukwu Stanley, 29, who allegedly scaled the fence of a residential compound in Ogui-Nike, Enugu, and attempted to rob a victim of his phone.
“The suspect was subdued after the victim raised the alarm, and a locally made pistol was recovered from him,” Ndukwe added.
He confirmed that all the suspects would be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
Commending the police operatives for their vigilance and professionalism, Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to rid Enugu State of criminals.
“We will not relent in our resolve to make Enugu State safe and secure. I urge law-abiding citizens to remain security-conscious and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station,” CP Giwa said.
