The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging that its troops are harassing residents of Ochon Community in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State over a land dispute with Alesi Community in Ikom Local Government Area.

In a statement signed by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, the Division described the allegations as “false, misleading, and clearly aimed at discrediting the efforts of troops working tirelessly to maintain peace in the area.”

He explained that soldiers of the 245 Battalion are deployed in the area strictly for internal security operations. “Their presence is to protect lives, safeguard critical infrastructure, and assist civil authorities in preserving public order, in full compliance with constitutional provisions,” Ayeni stated.

On the renewed clashes that erupted on 19 September 2025, the Army said its troops responded swiftly to prevent escalation and restore normalcy across the affected areas. The statement stressed the Army’s neutrality, noting: “The Division has no stake or interest in the ownership, control, or settlement of land disputes between Alesi and Ochon or any other communities.”

While reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights, the Army urged residents to disregard false reports and to embrace peaceful avenues for resolving disputes. “We will continue to work closely with other security agencies, civil authorities, and traditional institutions to ensure lasting peace and security throughout Cross River State,” Ayeni added.
