Nigeria’s former governor and Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has renewed his call for unity and national pride through football as he led fresh advocacy for the Super Eagles’ qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a recent video that has gone viral, the Abia-born senator passionately urged the Super Eagles to give their all on the pitch, describing the World Cup as a defining moment for Nigerian football.
“I believe in the Super Eagles. We have the talent, the passion, and the spirit to make it to the 2026 World Cup. What we need is focus, discipline, and national support. I urge every Nigerian to rally behind the team,”
Kalu declared.
The video, which sparked excitement among football fans nationwide, underscored Kalu’s long-standing commitment to sports as a tool for national unity and youth empowerment.
A known sports enthusiast, Kalu has often stressed that sports can heal divisions and inspire hope across the country. His advocacy extends beyond football, as he continues to champion investment in sports infrastructure and grassroots talent development.
Through his Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation for Sports Development, the senator has funded training programs, scholarships, and talent hunts for young athletes from underprivileged communities. The foundation has supported numerous promising footballers, boxers, and track athletes who have gone on to represent Nigeria at various levels.
“Sports remain one of the most powerful unifiers in our country. We must continue to invest in our young talents and give them the platform to excel,”
Kalu emphasized.
During his tenure as Abia State governor, Kalu played a pivotal role in promoting sporting excellence, supporting Enyimba FC to win back-to-back CAF Champions League titles in 2003 and 2004 — a feat that put Nigeria firmly on Africa’s football map.
In the National Assembly, he has continued to push for increased funding for sports programs and better welfare for Nigerian athletes, insisting that the government must treat sports development as a national priority.
“Our athletes are ambassadors of hope. We must ensure they have the facilities, incentives, and motivation to compete at the highest level,” he said in an earlier interview.
As Nigeria eyes qualification for the 2026 World Cup, Kalu’s rallying message has reignited optimism among fans and players alike. His consistent advocacy has earned him recognition as one of the few politicians whose influence has made a tangible impact on Nigerian sports.
With the Super Eagles gearing up for their next qualifying matches, Kalu’s message of unity, discipline, and national pride continues to resonate — a reminder that beyond politics, the passion for football remains a shared dream for all Nigerians.
“Nigeria’s journey to the World Cup is not just about football; it’s about the spirit of our nation. Together, we can make it happen,”
Kalu concluded.
