The women’s wing of the Enugu State Progressive Group, a political pressure movement founded by the immediate past Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Dr. Ben Nwoye, has been officially inaugurated with a strong commitment to promote good governance and inclusive development in Enugu State.

Operating under the banner of the Progressive Women Group (PWG), the body is led by Dr. (Mrs.) Promise Oby Ajih, the 2023 APC House of Representatives candidate for Udenu/Igbo-Eze North Federal Constituency.

Dr. Ajih, who also serves as the pioneer Enugu State Coordinator of the group, emphasized that the PWG is not a political party but a civic force dedicated to influencing governance and fostering progress across political divides.

“Our mission is to promote good governance, support progressive administrations that deliver for the people, and drive meaningful development,” Dr. Ajih stated. “PWG is a platform for women of like minds who believe in integrity, service, and community empowerment.”

Speaking during the inauguration of the state executive and local government coordinators in Enugu, Dr. Ajih explained that the group’s strength lies in its diversity.

“Irrespective of the number of communities across our local governments, we have been meeting, planning, and discussing extensively,” she said. “Our vision is not political, religious, or traditional—it cuts across all sectors.”

According to her, the PWG comprises individuals from various walks of life, including politicians, traditional leaders, business professionals, public servants, and members of the private sector, united by a shared purpose of moving Enugu State forward.

“We have gathered to join hands and work together to move Enugu State forward in the name of Jesus,” Dr. Ajih declared. “We will support good governance irrespective of political background. If someone is doing well in politics, business, ministry, or agriculture, we will support them.”

She added that even when financial resources are limited, the women would offer spiritual and moral support to those contributing positively to society.

“Even if we don’t have the money to support, we will kneel down as women and pray for their success and progress,” she said.

The PWG Coordinator announced plans to extend their outreach to six local government areas before the end of the year, where the group intends to empower the downtrodden and provide assistance to those battling hardship or illness.

“We have something to offer. We are not here to beg for help but to contribute to the growth of our society,” Dr. Ajih affirmed. “All we need is God’s grace to function and the wisdom to stand out as progressive women.”

She further stressed that when women are progressive, the entire society benefits.

“When you have progressive women, you have a progressive society. And when progressive men and women work together, progress multiplies,” she said.

She noted that each local government and community has designated leaders who will collaborate with government agencies, ministries, and development partners to promote accountability and effective governance.

“We will assist ministries, agencies, and all institutions that promote good governance in Enugu State,” she said. “Our goal is to support anyone who is doing well in any aspect of life.”

The event, which drew a large crowd of women from various local government areas, also had in attendance serving lawmakers, community leaders, and prominent citizens.

The Traditional Ruler of Ede Oballa in Nsukka Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Professor V. C. Onah, offered royal blessings to the leadership of the group, praying for divine wisdom and guidance in their operations.

The highlight of the colourful ceremony was the presentation of awards of recognition to distinguished citizens who have impacted the lives of the less privileged and contributed significantly to the upliftment of society in various capacities.
