The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday suffered another major blow as three members of the House of Representatives of Nigeria from Kaduna State dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers who defected are Aliyu Abdullahi (Ikara/Kubau Federal Constituency), Abdulkareem Ahmed (Kaduna South Federal Constituency), and Sadiq Abdullahi (Sabon Gari Federal Constituency).
Their letters of defection were formally read on the floor of the House by Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker, during Tuesday’s plenary session. In a show of political strength, Uba Sani, Governor of Kaduna State, was physically present in the chamber to witness the high-profile switch.
The defectors attributed their decision to what they described as festering internal crises in the PDP. They insisted that the party’s inability to resolve its lingering leadership issues had made it impossible to continue their political journey under its platform.
However, the announcement was immediately met with stiff objection from Kingsley Chinda, Minority Leader of the House, who faulted the justification for their defection. “You could have some crisis, but that does not amount to division in the party,” Chinda argued, maintaining that their reasons did not meet constitutional grounds for crossing party lines.
Deputy Speaker Kalu acknowledged Chinda’s point of order but declined to rule in his favour, allowing the defections to stand.
This latest move adds to the wave of high-level defections rocking the PDP in recent months. Just recently, Peter Mbah, Governor of Enugu State, alongside members of his cabinet, also joined the APC — a development political observers say could reshape the 2027 electoral landscape.
