Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking yet another major political realignment within 24 hours of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s defection.
Governor Diri, who is currently serving his second term, has been locked in a prolonged political battle with Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, over the control of PDP’s structure in Bayelsa State. The rift had fueled months of speculation about the governor’s political future.
Multiple sources confirmed the defection on Wednesday afternoon, with Arise News breaking the story.
The development was further amplified by Lere Olayinka, media aide to Wike, who took to social media to announce the move.
He wrote:
“Bayelsa State Governor, Duoye defects to APC.”
The defection of Diri, a key PDP figure in the South-South marks the complete takeover of the region by the APC with Edo, Delta, Akwa Ibom and Cross River already taken with Rivers State completely conquered by the FCT Minister.
More details are expected to emerge in the coming hours.
