The Rivers State Executive Council has cancelled a staggering N134 billion contract awarded by the past sole administrator of the state, Vice Admiral Ikot Ete Ibas (rtd), for the reconstruction of the ageing State Secretariat complex in Port Harcourt.
The contract, awarded to CCECC during the period of emergency rule by Ibas, came under scrutiny at today’s Executive Council meeting.
Following deliberations, the Council directed the construction company to refund the N20 billion mobilisation fee it had already received.
In the same meeting, the Council approved the constitution of a six-man committee headed by the Deputy Governor of the State, Prof. Ngozi Odu. The committee is mandated to evaluate and make recommendations for the construction of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres across the state to support the conduct of external examinations.
The Council also instructed the flood committee, chaired by the Deputy Governor, to take urgent steps to tackle flooding across the state. It further cautioned residents to desist from blocking drainage channels, stressing that the government would take the matter seriously to protect lives and property.
