Nottingham Forest F.C. has sacked head coach Ange Postecoglou after just 40 days in charge, following a crushing 3–0 defeat to Chelsea F.C. on Saturday.

The club confirmed the decision in a statement on social media, citing a “string of disappointing performances and results,” but declined to provide further details.

Postecoglou was appointed on September 9 as the clear choice of club owner Evangelos Marinakis, following the acrimonious exit of former boss Nuno Espírito Santo. But the Australian failed to register a single win in eight games, leaving Forest just one point and one place above the relegation zone.

His brief spell now becomes the shortest managerial tenure in Premier League history, surpassing the previous 41-day record held by Les Reed with Charlton Athletic F.C. in 2006. He also managed just five league matches — the second fewest by any Premier League manager, behind only Frank de Boer’s four-game stint at Crystal Palace F.C. in 2017.

Postecoglou’s reign began on a sour note with a 3–0 loss at Arsenal F.C. and a Carabao Cup heartbreak in which Forest blew a 2–0 halftime lead against Swansea City A.F.C., conceding twice in added time. A 1–1 draw at Burnley F.C. and a 2–2 Europa League draw against Real Betis Balompié offered brief hope — but Forest then collapsed with four straight defeats: home losses to Sunderland A.F.C. and FC Midtjylland, followed by away defeats at Newcastle United F.C. and Chelsea.

The club has now launched an urgent search for a new manager as it fights to escape the relegation zone in what is shaping up to be a turbulent Premier League campaign.
