Gunmen on Friday evening launched a deadly attack on a police station in Zonkwa, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing at least two police officers and plunging the town into panic.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the station, located just a few meters from Kamyim Hotel in Kurmin-Bi Zonkwa, and immediately opened fire. The incident sent shockwaves through the community, with residents fleeing for safety as the gunmen unleashed sporadic gunshots.
According to Daily Trust, an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity said the assailants were believed to have targeted the station in a bid to free some suspected vandals earlier arrested in Kachia.
“They believed that the suspects were being detained at the Zonkwa Police Station,” the witness said.
“However, it was later gathered that the suspects were not being held at the station. But the havoc had already been done.”
A security source also confirmed the incident to Daily Trust but declined to provide further details.
In a video of the aftermath seen by reporters, two uniformed police officers were lying lifeless on the floor, while a crowd of shocked residents gathered at the scene. The attack, once again, underscores the worsening security challenges facing communities across the country.
Local sources said normalcy has since been restored in Zonkwa, though the atmosphere remains tense.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kaduna State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the attack.
