A 22-year-old woman, Miss Odama Mary Agado, has reportedly died by suicide in Enugu after allegedly discovering that her boyfriend was involved with another woman.
Mary, a native of Woleche-Ipuole in Yahe Ward, Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, was said to have ingested a poisonous substance suspected to be sniper shortly after the incident.
According to reports, the deceased, a hairstylist based in Enugu, was financially independent and had recently bought a car and rented an apartment for her boyfriend.
A family member identified as Daniel told journalists that Mary had gone to visit her boyfriend last Friday when she found another lady in the apartment she rented for him.
“She became very angry and left for her own apartment. There, she called her mother and told her what happened,” Daniel said.
“She also said her mother should take whatever happened in good faith, that she wouldn’t live again.”
Daniel explained that Mary’s mother, who reportedly did not have airtime to call her back, was unable to reach her or raise an alarm. Moments later, she received a devastating call that her daughter had ingested poison and was rushed to the hospital.
Efforts by doctors to save her life were unsuccessful, and she was confirmed dead that evening. Her remains were transported to her hometown in Yala, where she was buried on Saturday.
“Immediately the body arrived, we dug a grave and buried her because she was too young to be kept for a customary burial ceremony,” Daniel said.
“We are at a loss as to why she should take such action over a boyfriend. Some people say she was spiritually manipulated, but whatever it was, no blame game will bring her back.”
The family reportedly chose not to involve the police, insisting that Mary had taken her own life.
