The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikoye Orutugu, has ordered a continuous and discreet investigation to determine the cause of death of a 17-year-old apprentice found lifeless in a compound at Umuzocha, Awka.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred on October 5, 2025, around 10:55 a.m., when a complainant returned from a church vigil and discovered the motionless body of an unidentified young man in her compound.
Police operatives from the Central Police Station, Awka, promptly responded to the scene. They documented the location, took photographs, and conveyed the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
Further investigation identified the deceased as Chikamso Ejiofor, aged 17, an apprentice. The victim’s parents were traced and informed of the incident but voluntarily chose not to pursue the case, citing their awareness of the teenager’s alleged unruly behavior. They submitted a formal withdrawal letter and swore an affidavit to that effect.
While acknowledging the family’s decision, CP Orutugu emphasized that the Anambra State Police Command has a statutory duty to investigate all unnatural deaths. “Regardless of the family’s position, it is our responsibility to ascertain the truth and ensure justice and transparency,” he said.
The CP has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, to continue a thorough review of the incident to determine the actual cause of Chikamso Ejiofor’s death.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the directive in a statement released on October 20, 2025.
