Senator Orji Uzor Kalu

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a member of the committee tasked with reviewing and amending the 1999 Constitution, has called for a major reform in Nigeria’s political system, advocating for a single six-year term for the President and state Governors instead of the current two four-year terms.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Kalu explained that the current system encourages politicians to focus more on securing re-election than on implementing effective governance.

“Under the present system, elected officials are often distracted by campaigns and political maneuvering. A single six-year term would give them the time and focus needed to implement long-term policies and deliver tangible results,” he said.

Kalu emphasized that extending the tenure would reduce political distractions and allow leaders to prioritize development over electoral politics.

“With only one term in office, Presidents and Governors would not be preoccupied with securing a second term. This will foster stability in governance and enable them to tackle the country’s pressing issues more effectively,” he added.

The proposal has sparked debate among lawmakers, political analysts, and the public. Supporters argue that a single, longer term would break the cycle of perpetual campaigning and provide leaders with uninterrupted time to implement policies and achieve sustainable development.

Critics, however, have expressed concerns about accountability, suggesting that without the pressure of re-election, leaders may become complacent. Some also worry that concentrating power in a single six-year term could give rise to potential abuse of authority.

Despite the differing views, Kalu remains committed to pushing for the constitutional amendment and engaging stakeholders to highlight the benefits of a single six-year term for the country’s political and governance structure.

The committee will continue consultations and discussions in the coming months to assess the proposal’s feasibility and potential impact, a process that could reshape Nigeria’s governance framework.
